Oh, no! sad.gif

But it's still 'early'. So he should be 'with it' for a quite a while yet. Terrible disease, though. I can't imagine how appalled and distressed and fearful he must feel.

When it sets I don't think he will be so distressed (he'll likely think he's living on Discworld) but it will be very hard on his family

But knowing in advance you'd end up like that - yeesh! I hope he gets out quite a few books before that happens though

Awww. Nice to hear that he sounds as alive as ever. And I'm happy that he has so many specialists to talk to. biggrin.gif

On the Paul Kidby's site :

From Terry :

Folks,

Happy New Year!

I'm going to keep this short because I'd like to finish Nation by the end of the week, but things here are looking up a bit since my last report.

I shall very soon be on medication that in theory should blow some of the cobwebs away and I hope my typing speed and accuracy will improve. Meanwhile, we are in contact with various organisation and researchers and keeping in touch with developments in the field, which is something of a Cinderella compared with other major illnesses.

In short, we are trying to set up a system so that if any researcher anywhere shouts "Eureka!" I'll be banging on his door even before he's found a towel.

I still expect to be able to go to the UK and US conventions. Apart from that, all my time in the office these days is spent writing, although there are a few events that I am taking on this year. I regret to say that I'm even cutting down on answering fan mail because my typing is so slow.

A new book or an answer to your fan letter - don't make me choose.

We're still getting lots of people saying "Is there anything we can do?" (Including high end brain specialists or other knowledgeable people who make up my "Greek Chorus" of advisors.) What will undoubtedly help, if you feel inclined, is to send some money. We will shortly be setting up a mechanism for you to do so and will post news on this when it is ready. This will be passed onto the Alzheimer's Research Trust, who have been very helpful.

A brilliant quote that biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Glad to see he's found some ways to alleviate the effects. What is this "Nation" he referred to?

Nation is the next book of Terry.
But we don't known if it will be a Disworld or no.
He say that if it must be a Discworld il will be. But it is not a obligation

Yeah, I can't wait to read it.... biggrin.gif

When the book makes it to Finland, that is. Bugger!

Anyway, it's great that there are so many people who want to help him. I never knew there were so many brain specialist Pratchett-fans! smile.gif

He was interviewed on radio a few days ago. He sounds fine. It affects his hind brain, not his forebrain, so his mind is ok, it is motor skills that are affected, hence his problems typing. So, while it is bad, it could be a whole lot worse: when the mind goes west, so does the person. In his case his motor functions will get him, but his mind will stay good.
Hm. Is that good or not? I think I'd rather keep my mind functioning than my body, personally.

August 1st 2008

An Update From Terry

Folks,

To those that want to know, it would be true to say that my life right now is occasional short periods of writing interspersed and interrupted with requests for interviews. As my UK readers will know, merely catching a variant of Alzheimer’s has propelled me onto more prestigious chat show sofas than I have ever seen in 25 years of quietly writing the Discworld series.

My general health is good. The most recent test by my specialist indicates, in effect, that I am no worse now, and possibly slightly better than I was at the back end of November. I have no idea when Unseen Academicals will be finished, simply because of the amount of media interest that continues to be generated by recent developments in the treatment of AD. Frankly, and with the agreement of my publishers, I feel that this is something that I should give priority to.

In a weeks time we are flying to the States to talk to a number of specialists in AD research and, incidentally, go out with the LAPD officers who are tasked with – and I am not kidding – locating and bringing home those elderly joggers with memory
difficulties who have jogged five miles and can’t remember where they live. I thought this was an urban myth, but apparently it is true. We will, obviously, be back in time for UK convention, which I would not miss for root canal surgery.

The bad news is that it looks as if, for various reasons, Going Postal The Movie will be delayed and shooting will not begin until the start of next year. However, the guys from Mob turned up this morning and filmed my sequence for the Colour of Magic DVD which will be released in October.

Thanks for the update, Witch from Lancre. smile.gif

It's a shame his writing and the film is held up, but, as he says, Altzheimers research and publicity is of primary importance. It can strike anyone.
